Organizers are gearing up for the second annual Run for the Hills Charity Challenge in Hazard, which will benefit several local charities.
Run for the Hills is a 5K run/walk and 1 Mile youth run to help raise funds for 13 Perry County nonprofits this year. Participating charities that will benefit from the event are: Buckhorn Children & Family Services, Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky, Hazard Perry County Community Ministries, Housing Development Alliance, Individuals Supporting Bulldog Education (ISBE), KY Infant Development Station (KIDS), KY River Children’s Advocacy Center (Care Cottage),
KY River Regional Animal Shelter, KY Mountain Health Alliance (Little Flower Clinic), Pathfinders of Perry County
Perry County 4-H, and Youth Leadership & Philanthropy Initiative.
The Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky, the event sponsor, works with donors and nonprofits to promote philanthropy as a tool for community development and long-term planning for building a better community. Last year, the community raised over $150,000 for 11 organizations, each one receiving a substantial operating grant and an endowment fund. Gerry Roll, executive director of the Foundation, believes this year can be even better. “Not only are we keeping our charitable dollars right here in Perry County to meet immediate local needs, we are building for the future by establishing their endowments too. Everybody wins – today and in the future.”
Each of these organizations will be raising money between August 1 and October 31st. Every dollar they raise will be matched with a dollar from community foundation “Charity Challengers”. After the event, the total amount will be split; half to use now, half to build the individual endowment for each organization.
The Run for the Hills Charity Challenge gives everyone an opportunity to be involved in improving our community. Whether you run, walk, jog, push a stroller, or just want to donate on behalf of your favorite charity, come out on October 6 to the Run for the Hills Charity Challenge and enjoy a day of healthy fun with your family and friends.
