Community Ministries has received an anonymous challenge donation that may allow it to temporarily return Corner Haven Crisis Center to full services for the winter months.
As a result of this challenge, Community Ministries is working on plans to temporarily return to full services the first week of November. This will not happen, however, unless the community responds to the challenge. It remains essential that individuals, groups, churches, businesses, and other interested parties continue to donate so that the challenge can be met. If the challenge is met, Community Ministries may be able to provide these critical services during the often severe weather of the winter months.
Due to a lack of funds, Community Ministries was forced in May to cut shelter services back to nights only. With cold weather quickly approaching, many members of the community have expressed concern about people experiencing homelessness having to spend part or all of their days in the cold. Through efforts led by the Hazard City Police, several community meetings have taken place where attendees learned more about shelter operations and were able to discuss how funds could be raised.
Full shelter operations will provide people experiencing homelessness with a safe and warm place to temporarily call home. While at the shelter, residents will continue to be connected with a case manager who will link them to education, employment, health and mental health care, housing, and other necessary services. In addition, staff will offer programming and activities designed to assist residents in meeting their goals.
It is important for our community to understand that this is only a temporary solution. It will allow Community Ministries to provide these services while at the same time continuing to work with community leaders to find a permanent solution. Community Ministries will also continue its dialogue with the City of Hazard, Perry County Fiscal Court, state, and federal government officials to secure stable revenue sources to allow it to offer full services on a permanent basis.
