The Board of Christmas for Charity is excited to announce this year’s recipient is Hazard Perry County Community Ministries’ Corner Haven Crisis Center.
Established 1993, Corner Haven has provided thousands of nights of shelter for men and women experiencing homelessness here in Eastern Kentucky. Hundreds of people have moved from homelessness to stable housing, meaningful employment, and higher education through the services offered at Corner Haven.
At this time, people in the community are working diligently to re-open Corner Haven 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through the winter months. In the spring of this year, Community Ministries had to reduce services to providing emergency shelter only. As winter approaches, members of the community are concerned about the people we have to turn out during the day. The Board and staff of Community Ministries are working with the Hazard Police Department, City of Hazard, and the Perry County Fiscal Court to obtain $50,000 to keep the shelter open during the fall and winter months of November through April. This would enable us to hire additional staff to keep Corner Haven open 24/7 for people in need of shelter. As of October 10, there is an anonymous challenge donation to help reach that $50,000 and open the shelter 24/7 beginning November 1. Corner Haven will receive this donation as long as the community continues to respond.
This year’s event, A Picture Perfect Christmas, will be held on December 1st at the First Federal Center at HCTC. Christmas for Charity was established in 1999 and has donated over $400,000 to local charities. In 2007, we created the Christmas for Charity Endowed Scholarship Fund. This fund is used to allow financially burdened graduating high school seniors from local schools a chance to obtain their goals and dreams by getting a college degree. This year, 6 students earned a scholarship in order to attend college.
At this time, the Christmas for Charity committee is seeking sponsors in order to make this event the most special one yet. Sponsorships are available at three different levels and range from $1,500 to $3,000. Optimal seating at the ball is limited and table placement will be based on sponsorship level and then by date of paid sponsorship. Please make checks payable to Christmas for Charity and mail to P.O. Box 719, Hazard, Kentucky 41702.
Individual tickets will go on sale November 12th and will be available at the Hazard Clinic or by mail. You must be 21 to attend. Tickets will be $85.00 per person, and a maximum of 500 seats will be available. For more information about Christmas for Charity, please call 606-439-1316.
