HAZARD — The Perry County Schools Local Planning Committee met Thursday night to discuss what would be next on the agenda after East Perry Elementary School is finished in June.
A public forum was held prior to the meeting to allow concerned community members to voice their opinions, as well as to help quell fears over spreading rumors that Chavies Elementary would be closed.
To clear up any confusion, among the committee members as well as the community, the committee voted to rescind the decision made at their last meeting as to what the next project would be for the district in the next years, and have a re-vote.
The committee eventually voted with their original decision to build a new school to accommodate A.B. Combs, Big Creek, and Willard Elementary. Then, if that project is approved by the board of education and the Kentucky Department of Education, then the next priority project would be to build a new school for Chavies Elementary.
District Finance Officer Jody Maggard wanted to make sure concerned community members knew the committee was doing what would be best for the whole community.
“I want everyone to think they’re a priority, because they are,” Maggard said.
