The A. B. Combs Bearcats and the Buckhorn Wildcats locked up in a titanic battle for the opportunity to play in the 6th grade county tournament championship. The outcome of the game was in question throughout, with the Bearcats pulling away in the final seconds for the 37-32 win.
The Bearcats got off to a strong start and took the early lead. Buckhorn rebounded and began to make up some ground. The first period ended with A. B. Combs leading 9-6.
Buckhorn tied the game early in the second period, only to give way to a strong rally by A. B. Combs to close out the period. The Bearcats went into the locker room with the 17-11 advantage.
The Wildcats came out of the intermission on fire and began to erase their deficit. Buckhorn completed their comeback as the period ended, and going into the final period held the 22-21 lead.
A fierce battle ensued in the fourth quarter, with each team taking a turn at the lead. With a minute remaining in the game, A. B. Combs held the scant 33-32 lead.
Buckhorn missed on an opportunity to take the lead and had to put A. B. Combs on the line. The Bearcats were able to make good on their free throws, lifting them to the 37-32 win, and a place in the finals.
