The A.B. Combs Bearcats and the Chavies Cardinals did battle on the hardwood for a spot in the semifinals of the 6th grade tournament. The game was close in the first half, with the Bearcats pulling away for the win in the second half.
The early portion of the opening period belonged to the Bearcats as they left the Cardinals behind. However, Chavies began to pick up the pace midway through and cut into the lead. A.B. Combs ended the period with the 10-6 lead.
Chavies clamped down on the defensive end in the second period, and stop A.B. Combs’ run. The Bearcats’ defense also stymied the Cardinals, making for a low scoring affair. A.B. Combs managed to preserve a single point of their lead, going into the locker room up 12-11.
A.B. Combs got back on track in the third period, and began stretching their lead. The Bearcats finished the quarter with the 25-16 advantage.
Chavies picked up the pace in the final period, and put together their best offensive performance. However, A.B. Combs was able to stay on top by besting the Cardinals 12-8 in the frame. The Bearcats went on to win the game by the final count of 37-24.
