HAZARD – The trial of a Knott County man accused of murder remains scheduled for later this month after attorneys were unable to reach a plea agreement this week.
Donald Combs, 35, has been lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard since May 2012, after he was alleged to have driven a vehicle over in embankment in the Lost Creek community of Perry County. Combs, of Fisty, was under the influence at the time of the crash, police said, which resulted in the death of a passenger in the vehicle, 51-year-old Burly R. Combs, also of Fisty.
Donald Combs was indicted in July 2012 on charges of murder, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence second offense, and driving on a DUI suspended license. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
A pretrial conference was held in the case on Feb. 27, at which time attorneys could not come to an agreement on a new plea. Combs remains set for a jury trial in Perry Circuit Court on March 25, and will appear in court again for a status conference on March 21.
