Irene Crutcher Webb, 96, of Hazard, widow of Robert C. Webb, died Tuesday, April 2 at her home.
She was born Feb. 8, 1917, the oldest daughter of the late Frank and Corba Crutcher of Maces Creek in Viper. She moved to Hazard where she graduated Hazard High School and Fugazzi Business College.
In 1938, she married “Bob” in a marriage that lasted 55 years until his death in 1993. Retiring in 1982 after 26 years of employment with Appalachian Regional Hospital (formerly Miner’s Memorial Hospital), she served as an ARH volunteer for an additional 25 years. Irene was an active member of the First Baptist Church for 70 plus years, serving as a choir member, Sunday school teacher, and a member of the mission team that established the Bluegrass Mission.
She is surrendered in love by her daughters, Bobbie Bevins and husband David, Patricia Sutton and husband Buddy, and Mary Sue Gee and husband Howard. Other survivors include her brothers, Eugene Crutcher of Jeff and Larry Crutcher and wife Gypsy of Glowmawr; granddaughters Laura Wilson and husband Jon, Melissa Bevins, and Stacy Janning and husband Rob; great-grandchildren Gideon and Anna Kate Wilson; a very special caregiver, Dorothy Chisholm; and many dear friends and relatives.
Irene will be remembered for her highly-skilled needlework and her love for gardening, square dancing, crossword puzzles, and canasta.
Arrangements are being handled by Engle-Bowling Funeral Home of Hazard, where the visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 with the funeral immediately following at Engle- Bowling Funeral Home.
