HAZARD – Elaine Chao, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush, will be this year’s featured speaker at the annual Civic Night in Hazard.
Chao, a graduate of Harvard Business School and the wife of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, served on former President Bush’s cabinet from 2001 to 2009, and was the first resident of Kentucky to receive such an appointment since 1945. Her résumé also includes stints as director of the Peace Corps, deputy secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and she chaired the Federal Maritime Commission.
Civic Night is hosted by the Hazard-Perry County Chamber of Commerce, and has been an annual event since 1953 to honor public service. The first woman was named as an honoree in 1970, and since then awards have been presented for man and woman of the year, and young man and young woman of the year.
Awards were presented last year to Fred Stidham, Letha Patterson, Chris Fugate, and Laura Feltner. This year’s honorees will be announced during the event, scheduled for Thursday, May 2 at 6 p.m. at the First Federal Center on the campus of Hazard Community and Technical College.
