Mayor and judge-executive forum set for April 24

April 15, 2014

HAZARD – It is time once again for members of the community and aspiring leaders to prepare for a public forum to discuss visions and ideas for the future of Hazard and Perry County. InVision Hazard, Hazard Perry County Chamber of Commerce, Applebee’s, Wendy’s and the Hampton Inn are sponsoring a town hall forum for the candidates for Mayor of Hazard and Perry County Judge Executive on April 24, at the Perry County Public Library, starting at 6:30 p.m. This forum will be broadcasted live on the WSGS radio through the generous sponsorship of the Young Democrats of Perry County.

The sponsoring committee is excited to again provide a forum for the candidates to share their views, concerns and ideas about creating a stronger, wealthier, healthier future for Hazard and Perry County. Events where the community can become more familiar with candidates’ views and ideas will provide citizens with an opportunity to cast a more educated vote for the candidates they believe will help move Hazard and Perry County forward. The last forum, for candidates for Hazard City Commission, proved very successful, with around 70 people in attendance in the auditorium of the public library. Attendees ranged from senior citizens to the local Boy Scout troop.

The overall forum process will remain the same as it was in the first event, says Betsy Clemons of the Hazard Perry County Chamber of Commerce. Candidates will be asked questions by moderator Max Mitchell with time limits for responses.

“There will be time allotted for pre-planned questions and time allocated for audience questions as well. We are going to keep this event to 90 minutes, as it seemed to be the right balance of time for the candidates and the audience,” said Allison Tse, the coordinator for InVision Hazard.

A youth representative will also be invited to ask questions that he or she feels are relevant to young people in the community.

After the last forum, the sponsoring committee reviewed audience evaluations and will make improvements on the sound system.

“We want everyone in attendance to have the opportunity to hear the candidates and for the candidates to be heard,” says Heather Burton, representative of Applebee’s.

All candidates have made verbal commitments to attend the upcoming forum. The candidates for mayor include Jimmy Ray Lindon, Aster “Cat” Sizemore and Jamie Miller. The candidates for County Judge Executive include Denny Ray Noble, Scott Alexander and Eddie Campbell.

More details about the forum will be available on a Facebook event page or through InVision Hazard’s Facebook group.
