The A. B. Combs Bearcats and the R. W. Combs Mustangs took to the hardwood Thursday with the county title on the line. After a hard-fought battle, in which neither team held more than a couple-buckets lead, the Bearcats pulled out the 40-33 win.

Both teams came out timid, with the first points not coming until the 4:57 mark when R. W. Combs hit a free throw. The Mustangs then picked up the game’s first field goal at the 2:27 mark. However, A. B. Combs would catch up and tie the game at five with a little over a minute remaining. At the horn, R. W. Combs held the 7-6 lead.

The Bearcats quickly grabbed the momentum in the second period as they found themselves on the line with just a few ticks off the clock. A. B. Combs went up 10-7 with less than a minute gone.

Noah Back’s back-to-back threes put the Mustangs back in the driver’s seat, and eventually put them on top 15-10. R. W. Combs would not be able to keep a firm grip on the lead as A. B. Combs came storming back. The Bearcats retook the lead, and went into the locker room up 18-17.

The two teams came out of the break and immediately went back into battle. The Mustangs attacked first, and midway through the period, held the 24-20 lead. A “3” by Corey Sizemore help restart the Bearcat offense, and another by Ryan Smith put A. B. Combs up 27-26 going into the final period.

The two teams continued to battle back and forth in the fourth quarter, with the Bearcats finally breaking the stalemate with a little more than two minutes to play (36-28). At that point, A. B. Combs had to make their free throws to preserve the win. The Bearcats were able to hold on for the 40-33 win, giving them the 2013 county title.

A. B. Combs (40) Braxton Whitaker 2, Devin Morris 2, Corey Sizemore 13, Ryan Smith 13, Cody Smith 1, Jacob Woolum 7 and Braxton Cottongame 2.

R. W. Combs (33) Andrew Colwell 12, Chase Pennington 4, Caleb Beverly 5, Richard Cornett 4 and Noah Back 8.
