Second Sunday is a statewide event in which residents in communities all across Kentucky are encouraged to be active. According to the Second Sunday website, the event “will serve as a catalyst for improving Kentucky’s health status and can become a template for nationwide awareness.”
Second Sunday happens once every month in Lexington, but every year communities across the state join in on a set day and time to get all of Kentucky moving at the same time for one day.
The guidelines for Second Sunday are simple: close down a local roadway within a community and showcase local community programs that are, according to the website, “positively affecting the community’s health.”
Krystle Chipman, with Pathfinders of Perry County, is spearheading this year’s event in Hazard. She said the street closure of choice will be Main Street, where several events will keep people moving all afternoon.
There will be historic walking tours of downtown Hazard, Zumba, Ultimate Frisbee, meringue dance lesson, a martial arts demonstration, and even a pet parade.
“Kids can bring their pets, and do a little contest,” Chipman said. She said the pets should arrive in costume to be judged for the contest.
There will also be an obstacle course during the event which will feature biking and roller blading.
Chipman said there is also a Second Sunday event happening at Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park the same day as the Main Street event, giving Perry Countians more opportunity to be active.
“(This whole event is) geared toward getting Kentuckians moving,” Chipman said. “It gives people the opportunity to be physically active.”
The Hazard Second Sunday event will be on Main Street on October 10 from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
