The Cornettsville Fire Department will have a haunted house to tour.
There is no charge for admission or parking. Period dress is not required, but is preferred. We will have a School of the Soldier at 11 am Saturday, Oct. 22 to teach safety, and marching. The Ladies Tea is at noon. They will have speakers, music, and food. Battles are at 2pm Saturday and Sunday.
We will have a period ball at 7 pm Saturday at Stuart Robinson School. The band will be one of the finest in the business- the Unreconstructed String Band. They will play and call dances.
The church service starts at 10 am on Sunday, and another battle will be at 2 pm. People will go to church, then go out and shoot at each other, just like at a family reunion.
All this takes place on the original battlefield, where Confederates were guarding Brashear’s Salt Works, in order to get the salt to preserve their meat. Union forces from Harlan came over the hill, and after a battle, the Confederates retreated to Whitesburg. The Union forces raided the camp and took what they wanted, including a huge pone of cornbread. They went home, and were raided a few days later by the Confederates from Whitesburg. Turnabout is fair play, they say.
