KSP investigating double fatality in Letcher

Staff Report

DRY FORK – A collision on KY 15 in the Dry Fork community of Letcher County claimed the lives of two men Thursday morning. Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard responded to the two-vehicle crash around 11:50 a.m., which involved a commercial tractor trailer and a pickup truck. Officers with KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Letcher County Sheriff’s Department, Letcher Ambulance, Neon Ambulance, and Sandlick Fire Department also responded to the scene.

According to the press release, it was initially determined that a 2000 Chevrolet pickup, driven by 26 year old Joseph Caudill of Jenkins, was traveling north on KY 15 when the vehicle crossed into the southbound lane. The Chevrolet truck collided with a southbound 2006 Freightliner tractor and trailer, which was being operated by Jody Townsend, 41, of South Carolina.

Joseph Caudill and a passenger, 43-year-old Bobby Jent of Neon, were pronounced deceased at the scene by Letcher County Coroner Perry Fowler. Police said seat belts were not in use.

Townsend was transported to the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the collision.

Police said wet road conditions are being considered as the contributing factor in this collision, which remains under investigation by Det. Randy Combs with KSP Post 13.
