PINE TOP — An altercation in Knott County Thursday evening involving Kentucky State Police Troopers ended with the unfortunate death of a local resident. Police say, troopers responded to Nealy Creek Road in the Pine Top community, after Post 13 dispatchers received a call at around 6:30 p.m., advising of a male subject who was walking on the roadway with a gun, making threats to shoot anyone who came around his residence.
According to the news release, the first trooper on the scene observed a male subject, matching a description given by the caller, standing in the roadway in front of a residence. Police say the trooper stopped some distance away and attempted to negotiate with the man. He specified that this individual’s hands were behind his back and he refused to bring them into plain view. Police say the man began making threats to kill the trooper and started bringing his right arm around in an aggressive manor in the direction of this trooper, and another trooper who had just arrived to assist. According to the release made by KSP, the trooper who had engaged the man fired three shots, striking him at least two times, ending the conflict. Police say troopers attempted to provide medical aid to the man but he died before EMS arrived.
According to the release, the investigation into this incident is in the preliminary stages, and more detailed information will be made available as it develops. Names of all parties involved will be released once all necessary notifications have been made. Both troopers have been placed on administrative assignment, as is standard procedure for those involved in a deadly force incident.
