PIKEVILLE – Eight months after sending out its first flight from Pikeville, Appalachian Air will stop operations, the airline announced this week.
The airline booked roundtrip, commercial flights out of Pikeville to Nashville, Tenn. from the Pikeville-Pike County Regional Airport.
The airline’s spokesperson, Luke Schmidt, has said the general reasoning for halting operations is the economy, resulting in a lack of passengers, he said in a statement shortly after the announcement.
“We’re certainly very disappointed that we had to take this action but it was the prudent thing to do because until the economy turns around, we just didn’t see any way that we were going to be able to build this to the proper level,” Schmidt told news outlets this week.
Officials say the airline’s last flight will in July, adding that those who have already booked flights for later than that time will be contacted to make arrangements relating to their tickets.
