HAZARD — The Bobby Davis Museum and Park will serve as host to the Wild Fig Pop-up Bookstore on Jan. 14 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. During this time, shoppers and literature enthusiasts will have the opportunity to browse a vast selection of books and gift items. Coffee will also be available, along with pastries and soups. The atmosphere one would expect to find in a downtown corner bookstore will be present, if only for one day, in Hazard’s Bobby Davis Park.
Pop-up retail has grown into a popular trend in sales and marketing, especially for artists. The basic idea behind pop-up retail is to create a venue that is temporary. The strategy involves “popping up” one day, then disappearing anywhere from one day to several weeks later. Pop-up retail allows a company or vendor the opportunity to reach out to customers, who might not ordinarily travel to their brick and mortar places of business. Pop-up retailers are often seen in cities like Lexington and Gatlinburg during the Halloween and Christmas seasons. Locally, pop-up retailers are common around the 4th of July, when the demand for fireworks is at a peak.
The event at Bobby Davis Park will offer much more than the typical pop-up sales display. For starters, the inventory available for purchase will be provided by an established bookstore out of Lexington that has built an impressive cultural following; Wild Fig Books. The Bobby Davis park itself makes for an inviting space to host such a gathering. Folks who visit the pop-up bookstore will have the opportunity to chat, while strolling the park or sitting to enjoy the coffee and the food. Bobby Davis Park and Museum is located at 234 Walnut St. in Hazard and the park is also home to Hazard’s annual Summer in the Park festival.
When the bookstore closes at 6 p.m., the literary festivities will continue with readings by Savannah Sipple, Melissa Helton, Shawna Kay Rodenberg and Crystal Wilkinson, who will be reading from her forthcoming novel The Birds of Opulence.
