HAZARD— The massive $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot generated a lot of buzz across the nation in the last few weeks. It was the world’s biggest jackpot. Lines were reported to be hours long, as people waited in line to purchase a ticket Wednesday night all across the U.S. There were two lucky winners in Hazard. Neither winners’s identity has been released, but The Hazard Herald can confirm that one winning ticket was purchased at the Marathon Double Kwik in Avawam. The Store Manager at the Marathon DK shared her thoughts.

“I think it is great that somebody in this area finally got something,” said Store Manager Natalie Slone, “I think pretty much everybody is just in shock.”

She received a call in the early morning hours that her store had sold the winning ticket. The winning ticket was sold around 1 p.m. on Sunday. The DK associate who sold the winning ticket was Jessica Thacker, who could not be reached for comment at this time. Slone was not present during the purchase of the winning ticket.

Slone has been with Double Kwik for almost two years and she has been at the Avawam DK since August. The store has 11 employees.

“I love this job. I wished I had found it sooner,” said Slone.

Slone shared her thoughts on what she would have done with the $1 million if she had won.

” A big portion would go to my kids, ” said Slone, who is a parent of seven. She would make sure her children’s future would be taken care of, Slone said.

The $50,000 winning ticket was also sold in Hazard, but a representative with Kentucky Lottery could not release the store’s name due to security measures set in place to protect both the retailer and the individual who won. The information should be released later today.

The $1 million winning ticket had to have all five white balls but not the Powerball, while the $50,000 winning ticket had to have four out of five white balls and the Powerball.
