HAZARD — Visitors of downtown Hazard now have a new restaurant to enjoy. Jackie’s Cakes, which is located at 413 Main Street, held its grand opening on Jan. 16. The bakery is owned by Jackie Moreno and, along with cakes, also offers a menu that will soon include breakfast and lunch, with plans in the works to eventually add dinner entres too. The folks, who were present at Jackie’s Cakes grand opening, were happy with the experience.
“The cupcakes were good. I had a burger that was pretty good as well,” said Jeremy Patrick, who was present to write an entry for his Hillbilly Stomp blog, which critiques staples of modern Appalachian culture.
Former Kentucky Wildcat, Jarrod Polson, attended the grand opening, along with his girlfriend, to greet patrons, sign autographs and capitalize on the cupcakes. Polson purchased an entire box of cupcakes to take home. This was Polson’s first trip to Perry County. He expressed admiration for the region.
“It’s very nice and all the people we have met have been very nice too,” Polson said.
The final quarter of 2015 proved to be a discouraging time for downtown Hazard with the burning of the Grand Hotel building and the closing of Treehouse Cafe and Bakery. Local citizens hope that the opening of Jackies Cakes is an indication that 2016 will restore some livelihood to Main Street. Jackie Moreno is devoted to helping revitalize the downtown scene and cake is a mighty fine method of livening up almost any situation.
Jackie’s Cakes will be open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For more information, search Jackie’s Cakes on Facebook or give them a call at 606-225-7266.
