KSP investigates fatal ATV collision

TOPMOST — A Knott County man was fatally injured Sunday night, when the ATV he was operating crashed into an embankment off of Highway 7 in the Topmost community of Knott County. Troopers and other first responders were dispatched to the scene around 9:54 p.m, KSP say.

According to a release made by KSP, they determined that Charles Dwayne Keens, age 30 of Topmost, was traveling southbound on Highway 7, on a Honda Foreman ATV, when the ATV drifted off of the right shoulder of the roadway. The ATV struck an embankment, ejecting Keens into a water-filled ditch line. KSP say, Keens was transported by Trans Star Ambulance to McDowell Appalachian Regional Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

KSP say, a safety helmet was not in use, and no autopsy will be conducted. Also, standard toxicology results are pending. This collision remains under investigation by Trooper Michael Caudill with KSP Post 13.
