HAZARD — Another staple of Fugate’s Entertainment has been lost to fire. The building, which was home to Fugate’s Bowling, burst into flames around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 13 and burned to oblivion throughout the evening, despite the best efforts of local firefighters. Fugate’s Skating Rink met the same fate nearly two years ago. Fugate’s Cinema closed last month, putting an end to an entertainment empire that brought joy to citizens of Southeast Kentucky for more than three decades.
The bowling alley closed to the public in Oct. but continued to serve as a polling site on Election Day. As of now, there is no word on where citizens of that precinct will be voting in the future. Many local citizens hoped the closure of the bowling lanes was temporary and expressed sadness in the wake of the fire that completely destroyed the establishment.
“The firefighters tried hard,” said Sasha Sizemore, who was on the scene during the fire, “They thought they had it out but it spread to the ceiling and after that it was over. Although they continued to try and get it out, it was a total loss in a matter of minutes. It was sad watching memories from my teen years go up in flames.”
Along with the bowling lanes, the building once housed an arcade, the 11th Frame Lounge and the Time Machine Pub. The cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation.
