Kennedy allegedly used Craigslist to scam victims

HAZARD — A Perry County man from the city of Hazard is accused of scamming multiple people by posting basketball or concert tickets on Craigslist and once receiving payment for them, he is alleged to have not have mailed out the tickets.

According to the arrest warrant, James “Jim” E. Kennedy , 45, of Hazard is alleged to have scammed multiple people from Feb. 14 – Feb. 17. Hazard Police Department say all incidents were caught on video cameras.

The arrest warrant says that on Feb. 14, Kennedy falsified a Craigslist post in order to scam Brady Hoeff. Kennedy is then alleged to have convinced Hoeff to send him $300 as payment for tickets to an AC/DC concert. After payment was received, Kennedy is alleged to have not sent Hoeff the tickets. The arrest warrant says Kennedy committed the offenses in the customer service center at Wal-Mart. The arrest warrant also says that Kennedy used a money gram to transfer the money.

According to the arrest warrant on Feb. 15, Kennedy falsified a Craigslist post in order to scam Steve DiMattia. The arrest warrant says that Kennedy convinced DiMattia to pay $350 for Bruce Springsteen concert tickets. Kennedy is then alleged to not have given DiMattia the tickets after receiving payment. According to the arrest warrant, the offenses occurred at the Western Union Office inside Food City in Hazard.

On Feb. 17, the arrest warrant says that Kennedy convinced Jessica Kolcan to send him $300 for payment for tickets to an UNC vs. Duke game. Kennedy is then alleged to have not sent Kolcan the tickets once he received payment. The arrest warrant says that Kennedy falsified a Craigslist post in order to scam Kolcan. According to the arrest warrant, the offenses occurred at Wal- Mart.

According to the arrest warrant on Feb. 17, Kennedy convinced Scott Bousquet to send him $237.50 for tickets to an AC/DC concert. Kennedy is then alleged to have not sent Bousquet the tickets after receiving payment for them. The arrest warrant says that Kennedy used Craigslist to scam Bousquet. Kennedy alleged committed the offense at the Western Union Office inside Food City in Hazard.

Kennedy was arrested on Feb. 26 by HPD and transported to Kentucky River Regional Jail where he was lodged in.

He is facing misdemeanor charges of theft by deception less than $500 and theft by unlawful taking or disposition all others less than $500.
