WHITESBURG — The Hazard Middle School Academic Team has gone on to finish in a tie with Willard Elementary for points in the regional elementary Governor’s Cup competition. Both schools earned a score of 22.5 overall during regionals at Letcher County Central High School on March 12.

In Quick Recall, Hazard Middle School won first place, followed by Willard, West Whitesburg and East Perry to round out the top four. For elementary Governor’s Cup there is no state tournament, so all of the competitors who place in the region have hit the pinnacle of performance for their division.

Letcher Elementary and Willard Elementary tied each other in the Future Problem Solving category with a score of 6.5. The competition at regionals was fierce this year. One testing category came down to the tie breaker, and only one testing category was decided by more than three points.

In Mathematics, Mason McAlarnis of East Perry won first place, with Max Johnson of Hazard Middle School finishing in a tie with Luke Sandlin of East Perry for second. Johnson and Sandlin went through three tie breakers and still finished even for second place. Haley Jones of Letcher and Allyson Slone of Willard complete the top five.

Baylen Haynes of A.B. Combs earned first place in the Science category, followed by Hayden Canady of East Perry, Brady Boggs of West Whitesburg, Shelby Turner of Cowan and Mason McAlarnis of East Perry. These students are top five Governor’s Cup in the region for the field of Science.

The race for first place in Social Studies was a photo-finish, with Sawyer Patrick of Hazard Middle School claiming first place in a tie-breaker against Chase Calhoun of R.W. Combs, who finished second. Austin Stacy of Hazard Middle School, Allison Boggs of Cowan and Layne Henrikson of Letcher complete the top five.

Christina Elsoueidi of Hazard Middle School continued to show excellence in the Language Arts category by winning first place in the region. Landon Maggard of Chavies finished second, with Shelby Turner of Cowan, Lucas Gibson of Willard and Kennedi Blair of Letcher rounding out the top five in Language Arts.

In Arts and Humanities, Lucas Gibson of Willard won first place. Ariana McMurl of West Whitesburg received second. Dylan Howard of Willard, Connor Ashley of R.W. Combs and Taylor Stacy of Robinson are the region’s top five competitors in Arts and Humanities.

After finishing second in Arts and Humanities, Ariana McMurl of West Whitesburg tied with Delaney Johnson of Jenkins Independent for first place in Composition. Ariana Bailey of West Whitesburg, Abigail McDougal of Cowan and Christina Elsoueidi of Hazard Middle School cap off the top five regional Composition competitors.

In the overall standings, Hazard Middle School and Willard tied for most points. West Whitesburg and East Perry followed closely behind. Congratulations to all of the schools and students who participated in the 2016 Governor’s Cup regional competition.
