HAZARD — In Feb., the Hazard Herald reported Pine Branch Coal’s announcement of approximately 150 layoffs to come in April. Those layoffs were handed down this week and the number of employees effected equals nearly 120. This number is slightly less than what was originally proposed. However, negative impact on the local economy is still inevitable. No further layoffs are currently projected by the company.
The job sites, which received the layoffs, are located in Perry, Leslie, Knott and Breathitt counties. The total number of coal industry employees to experience layoffs over the past decade in Eastern Kentucky has stretched to about 10 thousand.
