DELPHIA — A Perry County man died Wednesday night after the ATV he was driving collided with a tree. Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard were dispatched to Bark Camp Branch Road in the Delphia community after a call came in advising of the crash. Perry County Ambulance Service and the Perry County Coroner’s Office also responded.
According to a release made by Public Affairs Officer Jody Sims with the Kentucky State Police, the initial investigation determined that Michael Akers, age 43 of Delphia, and a passenger were riding on a Polaris Xplorer 500 when the ATV dropped off the left edge of the pavement. KSP say, the passenger jumped off the ATV, before it traveled across the roadway and struck a tree. According to the release. Akers was pronounced deceased at the scene by Jimmy Maggard Jr. with the Perry County Coroner’s Office. The passenger, 33 year old Ronnie Shepherd of Cornettsville, received minor injuries. He was treated at the scene, but was not transported to a medical facility. KSP say neither occupant was wearing protective head gear.
This incident remains under investigation by Trooper Matthew Gayheart with KSP Post 13. According to the release, toxicology results are pending and no autopsy will be performed.
