HAZARD — The Hazard Herald received a report on April 8 of an I.R.S. scam being conducted by phone in Perry County. According to the reports, a person claiming to be a representative from the I.R.S. is calling from the telephone number 561-601-7956. Local citizens have also contacted the Hazard Herald with reports of similar occurrences involving various other telephone numbers, most of which are registered online as mobile phones. In each case, the predator tells potential victims that they owe money to the federal government and then asks the victims to give personal information such as social security number, bank account identification and credit card numbers.
So far, the Hazard Herald has not heard from anyone who actually fell for the scam. However, it is important to remember that the I.R.S. will never ask you for this information through phone or email. If anyone calls or emails trying to receive such information, you are being exposed to a scam.
