HAZARD — A Perry County native accused of murdering an elderly couple in Florida was arrested in Hazard by Kentucky State Police (KSP) earlier today.
Michael Anthony Herald, 48, of Dover, Florida is accused of murdering Nancy and John Engelhart, both of Dover, Florida. The couple were found dead in their shed Thursday evening.
An arrest warrant was issued for Herald’s arrest and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department in Florida contacted KSP Post 13 asking for assistance in locating Herald.
According to a release made by Public Affairs Officer Jody Sims, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department had information that Herald was in Hazard as early as yesterday.
The release also says that Herald could be driving the elderly couple’s vehicle.
Around noon, KSP Troopers Issac Whitaker and Mike Wolfe noticed a vehicle that matched the description given to them by investigators with Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department driving along Combs Road.
Sims said Herald was the one operating the vehicle and he was arrested without incident.
Officers with Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department were notified of Herald’s arrest and will be heading to Hazard to continue their investigation.
Herald is facing charges of two counts of first-degree murder.
