HAZARD — Hazard was officially incorporated as a Kentucky city on April 30, 1884. Saturday will mark Hazard’s 132nd birthday, so to speak. InVision Hazard and the Appalachian Arts Alliance is organizing a celebration to honor the occasion.

On April 30, the top level of the Parking Structure in downtown Hazard will be converted into party central. The City of Hazard has donated new lights and bales of hay as additions to the decorations. Acclaimed musicians, Brett Ratliff and The Giant Rooster Sideshow, have signed on to provide live music throughout the evening. Appetizers and drinks will be available, including wine and beer. Games, such as Hazard trivia, will be played. There will also be activities for kids. The event starts at 7:00 p.m. and runs through 11:00 p.m.

Hazard’s Founder’s Day Celebration is recognized and sponsored by the Kentucky Arts Council, and is one of many that InVision Hazard and the Appalachian Arts Alliance hope to host downtown in the near future. Tickets to enter the event are $20 per person or $35 per couple. The cost per ticket is $5 for anyone under the age of 18. All of the proceeds will go to InVision Hazard and the Appalachian Arts Alliance.

Over the past couple of years, much work has been done to bring an atmosphere of celebration to downtown. Thursdays on the Triangle was a popular mini-festival throughout the summer of 2015. The Fish Fry returned on July 4, along with the first ever Fish the City fishing tournament. Work continues on the Art Station, which will be a fascinating facility when it is completed. Downtown traditions such as the Black Gold Festival continue. With each addition to Main Street’s livelihood that groups like InVision Hazard and the Appalachian Arts Alliance make, we come one step closer to accomplishing the dream that fuels the downtown revitalization movement statewide. If events like the Founder’s Day Celebration generate enough steam to become annual traditions, Hazard could very well lead the movement.
