Kentucky River 50+ Games provides activities for senior adults through a wide range of competitive events. The goals of the Kentucky River 50+ Games are to maintain and improve the health and wellness of older adults, provide competitive athletic & recreational experiences for older adults, focus attention on the importance of regular exercise, and provide an opportunity for socialization for older adults from across the region. The games are sponsored by Kentucky River Area Development District Area Agency on Aging & Independent Living and Kentucky Power Company.

This year the Kentucky River 50+ Games were held March 31, 2016 thru May 19, 2016. The Games were held at different locations for Bowling, Pool, Rook, Horseshoes, Putt-Putt and Golf Tournament with the big day at Knott Co Sportsplex on May 19. There were around 300 senior citizen participants who competed in gender and age divisions. The age divisions are as follows: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and 85+. The 50+ Games was May 14 “The Big Day”. The events available for participants to compete in on “The Big Day” included the following: Basketball, Walking, Softball, Shuffleboard, Electronic Darts, Washer Toss, Spincasting, Ringtoss, Cheerleading, Best Costume Contest and Spirit Competition. Also the games honor the spirit of aging with a medal and plaque for the Older Male and Female at the games. This year the winners were Ruth Baker from Perry County at 96 years young and Carl Parrot from Letcher County at 94 years young. Congratulations to all the competitors and special thanks to KY Power and the Knott County Sportsplex and their staff for all their assistance with the event.
