The Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program of Kentucky River Foothills Development Council, Inc. provides short-term assistance to Veterans that are either facing an eviction or who are homeless to immediately alleviate their housing crisis. Eligible Veterans may receive temporary financial assistance including a security deposit, rent payment(s), rental arrear payment, utility deposits, and/or utility arrear payments dependent upon their unique situation and availability of funds. Since 2013, the SSVF program has assisted more than 400 Veteran households obtain housing or alleviate an eviction notice.
In addition to receiving financial assistance, program staff will help Veterans identify potential VA and public benefits, provide housing counseling, develop employment readiness and vocational rehabilitation resources, and connect to other services needed for housing stability. This is a grant-funded initiative provided by the United States’ Department of Veteran Affairs. All services are provided at no cost and any financial assistance a Veteran receives will not have to be repaid.
The Veteran must have an active duty military discharge of anything other than “Dishonorable”; their service must be in addition to training. The entire household’s income must not exceed 50% of Area Median Income. This will fluctuate by county and by the number of people in the household. Finally, the Veteran must be experiencing a housing crisis by either being homeless or at risk of becoming homeless via an eviction notice. “Doubled-up/Couch-Surfing” is not defined as homeless per this program. Additionally, Veterans who are homeowners are not eligible for this program.
Funding is limited and provided on a first-come first-served basis with prioritization given to Veterans who are homeless.
