PERRY COUNTY — The Independence Day weekend will be packed with plenty to do locally. Holiday activities are taking place across the county.
The Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center will hold their fireworks display on Friday with a cookout. This is an annual event hosted for veterans at the center. Folks from the community are invited to watch the fireworks and spend an evening with the veterans.
According to Vicco Mayor Johnny Cummins, the annual Vicco Bash, which normally takes place on Independence Day weekend is being moved to Labor Day weekend this year.
The second annual Fish the City tournament is happening Saturday at City Hall in Hazard. Entry fee is $25 with a top prize of $250 awarded. Proceeds this year will go to Corner Haven and the Care Cottage. Fishing takes place in the Kentucky River downtown. The fishing area is expanded this year and small boats will be allowed. The picnic shelter at City Hall is the location for Hazard’s annual Fish Fry and Cookout, which starts at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 2. Veterans eat first at the cookout this year. The fireworks show on the Hazard Bypass is scheduled for Saturday night.
Buckhorn is where the action will be on Monday, July 4. The Lodge will have their buffet open that day, with fireworks at the Lodge planned for that night. A DJ will provide music for the festivities and a food booth will be open for the fireworks display.
All fireworks presentations begin at the edge of dark.
