PERRY COUNTY — Three wrecks resulting in injuries occurred in Perry County over the span of only a few hours on Monday. The first happened near the Daniel Boone Shopping Center on Hwy. 80. According to emergency crews that worked the scene, a white SUV hydroplaned into a ditch on Hwy. 80 and then flipped onto its top as it re-entered the roadway. Five additional vehicles then crashed into each other trying to make a sudden stop unexpectedly as they approached the scene.
Six people were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that officials say were non life threatening. The wrecks caused major traffic delays on Hwy. 80 heading west. Traffic in the Daniel Boone Shopping Center, including the Walmart parking lot, was clogged for over an hour.
Less than three hours later, a wreck involving two vehicles happened on Combs Rd. between Combs and Airport Gardens. According to witnesses, a truck, attempting to dodge a car that had slowed down to turn off of the road, swerved into the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming car. Three people were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Their status remains unknown at this time.
Another accident occurred on Hwy. 15 in the Grapevine community Monday evening, when a truck hydroplaned and flipped. The truck was the only vehicle involved. The driver was taken to the Hazard ARH and later transported to UK Medical Center in Lexington. At last report, the driver is in stable condition.
No illegal activity has been reported with these crashes. Heavy rains moved through the area prior to the accidents. Two out of the three incidents resulted from a vehicle hydroplaning.
