YERKES — At about 3:30 Sunday morning, Krypton Fire and Rescue arrived at the post office in Yerkes to try and save the structure from flames. Part of the front porch and the roof were already damaged when they pulled into the parking lot. Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident. As of now, they do not believe foul play was involved.

The Krypton Fire Dept. succeeded in saving most of the building. Officials are hopeful that the post office will be able to open again soon in its familiar location. In the meantime, mail for the Yerkes Post Office will be delivered to the post office at Avawam. Anyone with a P.O. Box at the Yerkes Post Office must travel to the Avawam Post Office for mail retrieval until the situation at the Yerkes location is resolved. Gloria Stidham of Yerkes Post Office is currently stationed at the Avawam location to assist Yerkes customers.

The Krypton Fire Dept. expressed gratitude toward a Good Samaritan in the Yerkes community, who used a hose at the scene to battle the blaze, while they were on their way there. The post office shares the building with a convenience store. With its positioning at the center of the community, beside Hwy. 451 between the railroad tracks and the river, the Yerkes Post Office has long been a cherished landmark in the area.
