HAZARD — Two districts in the Perry County Board of Education experienced highly contested races on Election Day. In District 1, Denny Combs ran unopposed, thus securing a spot on the Board. Voters in Districts 2 and 3, however, were given a couple of candidates from which to chose.
In District 3, Lloyd Engle received 59 percent of the vote to win the position over incumbent Yvon Allen. Engle has served on the Board in the past. Allen will leave his Board position with an impressive career in education to his credit.
Following the election results, Engle said he wants to thank everyone who voted for and helped him in this election. Engle also said he is ready to get to work to continue progress in the Perry County Schools. According to Engle, this has been and always will be about our children.
Voters in District 2 chose incumbent Debbie Hignite McIntosh, with 58 percent of the vote over challenger Charles “Dougie” Campbell.
“We have a responsibility and it is not to be taken lightly. It is our duty to give our students every opportunity to be a success and to be able to face their future without fear or doubt,” McIntosh said of her position on the Board earlier in her campaign.
Terms for these elected officials will begin in January. Denny Combs will take over the spot that has been occupied by Robin Gabbard, who has received words of praise for the time she served from members of her community, as well as her colleagues with the Board of Education.
