HAZARD — The Perry County Fiscal Court originally scheduled a special meeting for Dec. 2 to hold the second, and final, vote on a proposed payroll tax in Perry County. However, the meeting and the vote have been rescheduled for Dec. 9 at 10:00 a.m. in the Courthouse.
The meeting date was changed because the Hazard High School football team advanced to the state championship game, which will be held at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time in Bowling Green on Dec. 2.
The first vote on the tax by the Fiscal Court resulted in a tie, which by law, automatically killed the resolution, meaning it did not pass. However, the Fiscal Court can bring resolutions that fail to pass back up for vote again, and that is what happened with the payroll tax.
When the tax faced the Fiscal Court members again, it passed with a majority yes vote (3 yes votes to 1 no vote). In order for a resolution to officially become law, it must pass through the Fiscal Court twice. This means that the payroll tax will be placed on workers in Perry County if the resolution receives a majority yes vote on Dec. 9.
All Fiscal Court meetings are open to the public.
