HAZARD — Residents and businesses inside Hazard’s city limits might have noticed a slight increase in the amount owed on their trash bills this month. The reason for the raise in cost is a rate increase that the City of Hazard and Rumpke recently announced. Rumpke is the company partnered with the City of Hazard to take care of trash pickup and disposal. The new rate took effect on Jan. 1.

The price increase equals 1.73 percent. With this increase, the monthly rate for residents totals $15.26. Commercial rates have always varied depending on size. So, the rate each customer paid through Dec. will increase by 1.73 percent.

Along with the billing announcement, the City and Rumpke also included a reminder to residents and businesses that all trash must be placed inside of bags in containers. Households that don’t currently have a trash can, can lease a 96-gallon trash cart from Rumpke for $4.07 per month. Carts can also be purchased for $79.50 per new cart or $47.70 per used cart.

To dispose of large items like furniture and appliances, residents should contact Rumpke at 1-606-672-4170 or 1-877-786-7537 x 7461 at least 24 hours before collection day to request bulk item collection. Additional fees will apply.

Residents and businesses can also rent open top dumpsters for larger clean-ups. Rumpke can be contacted at 1-606-672-4170 or 1-877-786-7537 x 7461 for pricing and size options.
