BULAN — A two-vehicle collision claimed the life of a Leslie County man Monday night. The accident occurred on Hwy. 476 in the Bulan community of Perry County. The road was closed for several hours while Kentucky State Police, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County EMS, and Jakes Branch Fire Department responded to the scene.

Perry County Deputy Coroner Jeffery Combs pronounced Stephen Michael Griffie, 39, of Hyden deceased at the scene.

The wreck happened around 5:35 p.m. Monday night. The accident occurred near Indian Head Hollow.

Kentucky State Police Post 13 say during their preliminary investigation they determined that a 2007 Kia van being driven by Kaegan Welch-Embrey was traveling west on Hwy. 476 when it crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 1999 Chevrolet pickup that was being driven by Griffie.

KSP said neither Griffie or Embrey were utilizing seatbelts when the accident occurred.

Embrey was flown to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennesse for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

KSP say Griffie was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort where an autopsy will be performed Tuesday.

Toxicology reports are pending for both drivers, KSP said.

No criminal charges have been filed as of press time.

The accident is under the investigation of KSP Trooper Scott Caudill with KSP Post 13.
