HAZARD — Piano students with Hazard Community and Technical College’s (HCTC) piano class delighted the crowd during their performance of their spring piano recital on Friday.
Piano Instructor Kay Crowe welcomed the parents, grandparents, and lovers of music to HCTC’s campus. She told the audience to expect a variety of different songs during the evening’s recital.
“I’m the teacher of these wonderful students. Enjoy the music tonight,” Crowe said.
A total of 15 students would perform during the course of the evening.
The first performance of the evening was Alice Caudill. Caudill performed the contemporary piece “Thy Will.”
Next was Parker Maggard performing the hymn “Jesus Loves Me.”
Maggard was followed by Ethan Applegate; Applegate performed “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Disney’s Toy Story.
Next was Noah Holland performing “Can-Can” from Orpheus in the Underworld.
Following Holland, Chole Brashear performed “Be Our Guest” from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.
Next was Ivanka Sharma, she performed “Spring” from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi.
Following Sharma, Matthew Aruta performed the traditional piece “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”
Emma Jo Jones followed Artua; Jones performed “Minuet” by J.S. Bach.
Next was Sara Spicer, she performed “Hallelujah” from Dreamwork’s Shrek.
Following Spicer, Hannah Daniels performed “You and Me” by Lifehouse.
Daniels’s been playing the piano for two and a half years, “My mom and dad made me take piano lessons, but now I love it.”
She is 16 years old and is a student at Perry County Central High School. Once she graduates from high school, Daniels plans to attend medical school. She wants to be a pediatrician.
“I just love helping people,” Daniels said.
When she isn’t playing the piano, Daniels loves to run. She also volunteers at the hospital and hospice.
Following Daniels, Paige Asher performed “Ave Maria” by J.S. Bach.
Next was Sophia Jiang; Jiang performed “Fur Elise” by L.V. Beethoven.
Following Jiang, Jillian Combs performed “Chariots of Fire” theme from the motion picture.
Kasey Maggard performed the final student performance; she played “Rock-N-Roll” melodies by Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley.
Maggard, 15, is a student at Perry County Central High School. She is a member of the Lady Dores basketball team.
She has been playing the piano since she was six years old. Maggard’s been training under Crowe since Crowe became the pinao instructor in 2012.
“I hadn’t played them before and wanted to try something different,” Maggard said about selecting the melodies by Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley as her recital pieces.
After each performance, a thunderous applause echoed throughout the room. Crowe praised each of her students when they walked passed her after their performances.
“Great job!” Crowe said, giving each of her students a thumbs up.
In a surprising treat for the audience, Crowe performed “Moonriver” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Her performance garnered a thunderous applause from the crowd.
Crowe said she was proud of her students’ performances, “They are all great.”
She is a retired Perry County Schools music teacher. Crowe has been teaching the piano class at HCTC since 2012.
