HAZARD — A local off-roading club spread some holiday cheer this week.

The Higher Ground ATV Club set out Monday with a word of prayer as they joined Santa to deliver toys to several children in Perry County. Danny Miller, a member of the club, said he and his fellow members held a drive to gather toys which were then be distributed to children who may not have otherwise received Christmas gifts this year.

“Churches sent us a list of kids who don’t get a whole lot,” Miller said on Monday. “Some schools sent us a list. That’s the list we’re taking care of today.”

Several members of the club already give back to the community in the form of volunteering with local fire departments or working with the local ambulance service or 911 office. But the toy drive was something extra they could do for the community, Miller added.

“We wanted to do it not just for us,” he said. “We want to do something to give back to the community.”

The Higher Ground ATV Club started a few years ago with only seven members, but its ranks have since grown to more than 30. According to Miller, members have joined from Perry and surrounding counties, with the club’s home trail located at the Knott County ATV Training Center.
