HAZARD – A crash on the Ky. 15 bypass in Hazard took the life of one person and injured another Friday afternoon.
Police were called to the scene just before 3 p.m. after a Ford Ranger driven by 51-year-old Ronald K. Hamblin collided with a Nissan Altima being driven by 57-year-old Deborah Justice of Hazard.
Major James East of the Hazard Police Department said Justice was pulling onto the bypass from Citizens Lane in front of the Save-A-Lot grocery store when the pickup slammed into the driver’s side of her vehicle. She was transported from the scene for treatment, but according to police died en route to the University of Kentucky medical center in Lexington.
Hamblin, of Gays Creek, was also injured in the incident, but police have not released the extent of his injuries.
East said it is not entirely clear what circumstances led to the crash, such as if the newly-installed traffic lights at the intersection where the incident occurred were a factor, though police are reconstructing the collision and an investigation remains ongoing.
