HAZARD – Construction continues this week in the downtown section of Hazard as crews work to make improvements to area sidewalks and roadways.

Workers with Mountain Enterprises were out on Friday pouring concrete along East Main as part of the state-funded project, which includes repairing sidewalks in the city to make them more compliant with the American Disability Act. The improvements include ramps for better wheelchair accessibility.

The projects also includes resurfacing just under half a mile of roadway between the William D. Gorman Bridge and High Street, according to H.B. Elkins, information officer for the state highway department in Jackson, along with just over a mile of roadway across town on a part of Dawahare Drive.

“The work should be done within the next couple of weeks,” Elkins said, noting the total cost of the project is $366,951.
