On Friday, the Perry County Central Lady Commodores hosted the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers in a big match up. Not only were the Lady Commodores taking on a tough opponent, but Coach Randy Napier was attempting to tie the state record for wins by a girls’ coach.

Coach Napier, prior to the game, had 792 wins, one shy of the record. With the 68-64 win over the Lady Jumpers, Coach Napier tied the record held by Coach Howard Beth of Marshall County.

The Commodores had a difficult time of things as at no point was the margin more than a few baskets. At the end of the first period, Perry Central was up 17-15, and went into the half leading 31-30.

Things remained tight in the third period with the Lady Commodores surviving a scare to hold the 44-42 advantage. Perry Central built a small lead in the fourth quarter, and survived yet another Somerset rally to take the 68-64 win.

Coach Napier will be going for the record on Tuesday against Allen Central.

Perry Central (68) Kayla Rankin 31 (10 rebounds), Whitney Evans 16 (6 assists and 3 steals), Lyndci Combs 11 (2 assists), Elizabeth Gayheart 2 (6 rebounds and 2 steals), Mishayla Tackett 2 (5 rebounds), Kaitlyn Cornett 2 (2 rebounds) and Morgan Eddington 3.
