On Thursday, the Perry County Central Lady Commodores took on the Marshall County Lady Marshals in the opening round of the girls’ Sweet Sixteen. The Lady Commodores got off to a rocky start, and never recovered as they fell 54-38.
Perry Central got into a running contest with Marshall County in the first period, but could not get a shot to go down. Before they knew what hit them, they were down double-digits. The Lady Commodores picked up a pace late, and at the horn, they were down 14-8.
The two teams played even in the first half of the second period, with the Lady Commodores keeping the margin around six. Late in the half, the Lady Marshals got hot, and put Perry Central down 30-16 at the intermission.
Scoring was at a premium in the third period, with Perry Central getting the better of things. However, the low scoring did not allow the Lady Commodores to shave many points off their deficit. With eight minutes left to play, they needed to make up 12 points at 37-25.
The Lady Commodores made a small run early in the fourth quarter, but it was quickly cut off. The Lady Marshals showed great poise down the stretch, holding off Perry Central for the 54-38 win.
