On Saturday, the Hazard Bulldogs and the Perry County Central Commodores did battle on the baseball diamond. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead, and had to hold off a late charge by the Commodores to take the 8-7 win.
Perry Central opened the game with a single run in the top of the first inning. Hazard countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame (2-1).
The Bulldogs then took a commanding lead with five runs in the bottom of the second inning (7-1). The third and fourth inning saw the two teams traded runs, with Hazard holding the 8-2 advantage going into the second half of the game.
Perry Central began to cut into the Hazard lead with a run in the fifth inning, leaving the Bulldogs with the 8-3 lead. The Commodores broke loose with a seventh inning rally, but had it cut short with four runs. The rally left them short, giving the Bulldogs the 8-7 win.
Ryan Smith got the win on the mound, going 4.67 innings with 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and 4 strikeouts. Coby Cumbow went 2 innings with 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout, while Griffin Wells finished the game with a strikeout. Jordan Baker threw 4 innings with 8 hits, 6 runs, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts, and Braxton Cottongame went 2 innings with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.
