CHAVIES—An ATV accident in Perry County last week has left one man dead.

Perry County Deputy Coroner Jeff Combs said James Smith was pronounced dead Friday evening at the Hazard ARH after losing control of his ATV on Clear Fork Road, just off Hwy 28 in the Chavies community.

Combs said the body was sent for an autopsy since a preliminary investigation did not lead coroners to an obvious cause of death, and he was not sure whether or not Smith had been wearing a helmet.

“It must have been internal,” he said, adding that no one else was injured in the accident.

Combs said the coroner’s office expects a preliminary report to be completed in the next few days.
