HAZARD – Beginning this week candidates expecting to run in next year’s election will have the opportunity to file for office, and at least one local race will have an incumbent as District Leigh Anne Stephens noted on Monday her intention to seek re-election.

Stephens will be seeking her fourth term as district judge, a position which she first won in 1998. She said she is excited to get her campaign underway, but also about the opportunity to continue working with youth-oriented programs such as Camp Promise, a mentorship program which aims to help underprivileged children in Perry County.

“I feel like the district court works very well now, and that I have a lot of programs going, especially with young people, and that’s what I’m excited about,” Stephens said.

There had been some speculation that Stephens would begin a campaign for the circuit court judgeship after Judge William Engle announced he would not seek re-election earlier this year. Stephens said she is happy where she is and hopes to continue working in the district court in Perry County.

“I feel like being district judge has really allowed me to help people,” she said, “and that’s why I am wanting to stay where I am.”

As of press time, no other candidates for district judge have announced their intent to run in 2014, a year which includes nearly every local contest on the ballot. With the exception of the offices of commonwealth’s attorney and circuit clerk, along with a few seats on the county and city school boards, every office will be up for grabs in 2014, with each of the following races set to appear on the ballot:

Kentucky Senate, District 30

Kentucky House of Representatives, District 84

Perry Circuit Judge

Perry District Judge

Perry County Judge-Executive

Perry County Magistrate, Districts 1-3

Perry County Attorney

Perry County Clerk

Perry County Sheriff

Perry County Board of Education, Districts 1, 4, and 5

Hazard City Commissioners, four at-large seats

Hazard Independent Board of Education, two at-large seats

Vicco Mayor

Vicco City Commissioner

Buckhorn Mayor

Buckhorn City Commissioner

Property Valuation Administrator

Perry County Soil Conservation District

Candidates can file for office beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 6, with a deadline for the May primary of Jan. 28, 2014.
