HAZARD—One Perry County man is behind bars after an attempted robbery led to the shooting of a witness earlier this month.
According to an arrest citation obtained at the Perry County Courthouse, Dustin M. Stidham, 26, of Bonnyman, allegedly attempted to rob Billy Helton on Feb. 15, on Wells Street in Hazard. The Kentucky State Police responding officer reported that Stidham pointed a loaded handgun at Helton and demanded money.
The officer wrote Helton struggled with Stidham over the weapon and the gun discharged once. Stidham then apparently turned the gun on witness Trista Caudill and shot her in the lower right leg.
Helton and Caudill were transported to the Hazard ARH for treatment of injuries, with Caudill reportedly having fractures to both lower leg bones.
Stidham was charged with first-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment. Stidham is currently being held at the Kentucky River Regional Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.
