HAZARD- Law enforcement from around the area gathered to raise money for Special Olympics on last week.


Officers from the Hazard Police Department, Perry County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky State Police were on hand at the event held at the Big Blue Smokehouse. The officers took the place of the regular servers and all tips collected went to the Law Enforcement Torch Run which raises money for the Special Olympics.


According to Jayna L. Oakley, special projects director and torch run liaison with Special Olympics, “The mission of the Kentucky Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics is to raise funds for and awareness of Special Olympics Kentucky. Law enforcement officers from throughout the state, carry the Flame of Hope in honor of the Special Olympics athletes in their area and around the world,” Oakley stated.


Oakley went on to report that in its 28-year history the Kentucky LETR has raised more than $1.5 million.


According to Oakley, a total of 24 officers participated in the event and raised a total of $1748.41.
