LETTERS: Attention should be given to local businesses during festival
The 2013 Black Gold Festival is over and other than the parade being interrupted by rain, I think everyone had a wonderful time.
I have enjoyed each Black Gold Festival since I moved here and appreciate the hard work each of the committee members puts into its success. These events do not happen by themselves and hours of preparation go into each one.
Some of the businesses of Hazard hopefully see large increases during this time with the influx of visitors, but sadly, others do not. Placement of booths can greatly affect merchants. When a local business is completely hidden, it loses much needed revenue. I hope in the upcoming years, local businesses are given first consideration when it comes to booth placement. Every working day of the year these business contribute to the local economy through taxes and employment to other members of the community. For them to play second fiddle to someone who is only here one weekend a year seems unfair to me.
