LETTERS: Focus for Perry County is on student achievement
To the residents of Perry County,
I wanted to introduce myself to you as a representative of the Perry County School District. Many of you may know me personally. I am an alumnus of Perry Central, a lifetime resident of Perry County, and yes, the proud daughter of Keith and Charlene Miller. I am also a mother to two young boys and married to Mark Collett.
Professionally, you may not be as familiar with my background. I have spent a majority of my tenure as an educator traveling. Thus, I feel the need to clarify my professional background as well as my expertise in education. Before I do that, I wanted to state that I am honored and blessed to represent Perry County. This is home for me; a home and community that I cherish dearly. It is with pride that I take on the task of meeting your expectations for our educational system.
Professionally, I have served in many roles: teacher, principal, technology integration specialist, and, most recently, as an education recovery leader for the Kentucky Department of Education. With these roles and experiences, I have been trained in only the best practices of highly successful schools. I have been a part of the school turnaround process which enabled me to assist schools in moving from low performing school status to a proficient status. I am confident and skilled in these tools. It will be my duty to serve this community and do the best job I have ever done. I believe in hard work, honesty, and making the right decision, even if it is unpopular for the benefit of our students.
For years I have read malicious and manipulated comments regarding Perry County Schools. It is evident all eyes are on our school system. My reply to that is that we are now growing, learning, and shifting our focus to student achievement. I understand that not all will be in agreement with every decision. However, I also know that these voices will be silenced through evidence of the growth of our schools, the student success, and the transparency of our decisions. We are moving in the right direction. Please join us by taking steps forward, focusing on the goals we have set, and being positive about the opportunities that we are now providing for our students.
